Strategy Director

We are looking for the next generation of strategic leadership who will elevate and evolve the strategic output on some of the agencys most strategically driven clients. The Strategy Director will work closely with internal leadership and client leadership to push the boundaries of creativity to deliver Outsized Impact inspired by the wonderful clarity of your strategy. Youll see yourself as a creative/brand strategy leader with a passion for marketing ideas which create not only a dent in culture, but help to transform any brand or business.

The role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Setting the strategic vision for some of VB+P’s CPG brand clients, e.g. Post-it Notes, Scotch Tape.
  • Being a creative driver. You’ll support the development of breakthrough creative work for the brands you lead, ensuring there is a highly compelling and motivating jumping-off point for creativity through a clear strategy.
  • Developing and shaping brands in some upstream assignments where we identify and create an Enduring Belief and create the brand essentials.
  • Growing and mentoring a Strategist and Junior Strategist, who will be your partner in crime and most important responsibility.
  • Partnering with cross-functional leads on process, team dynamics and client opportunities to drive overall health of the account.
  • Partnering with the Head of Strategy on new business opportunities, the lifeblood of any growing agency.
  • Thinking proactively about our client’s business and driving trust with key clients.
  • Bringing a healthy balance of rigor and cultural insight to strategy presentations and briefs that inspire clients, creatives and consumers, never accepting ‘good enough’.

Here is what the day-to-day looks like:

  • Check in with your Strategist on their progress, workflow and general well being, providing direction, feedback and coaching as needed
  • Check in with your Business Lead and Creative Directors on the overall progress of upcoming and existing briefs in the system, identify areas where strategic influence is needed
  • Check in with key clients as necessary: Is there more context needed for a brief? Have all the right voices been heard? Is a preview necessary?
  • Meet 1:1 with Head of Strategy to discuss priorities, areas of support you need, and the temperature of the team
  • Review progress of strategy with cross-functional counterparts and clients
  • Review creative, providing guidance and feedback with generosity

Below are some of the qualifications we’re interested in. If you don’t meet all of them, don’t count yourself out.

  • Experience working with the rigor and discipline necessary in the CPG category
  • Experience leading and launching breakthrough campaigns in creatively led agencies
  • Experience managing Strategists and/or Strategy interns
  • Upstream experience a plus, but not a must
  • 4C’s positioning development
  • Sharp qualitative research and quantitative data analysis fundamentals
  • A growth mindset and a willingness to learn how to lead
  • Ability to build rapport and relationships with all clients, especially senior clients.
  • A sense of presence in the room with all clients, especially senior clients.

Within 1 month you will:

  • Complete on-boarding with our Talent Team. - They will bring you up to speed on VB+P’s benefits, perks and culture.
  • Complete on-boarding with Head of Strategy, Chipotle and Frito-Lay team. - They will walk you through VB+P’s Strategy Department Vision, Department Roles and Responsibilities, Positioning Process, client fundamentals and provide you with the necessary background on all elements of the role.
  • Meet with all departments you will interact with in the context of your role. - A representative from each department will walk you through the role they play with respect to new business/marketing and the process to engage them.
  • Have introductory meetings with at minimum 5 people in leadership at VB+P. - This is part of our “welcome” process, to ensure that you are getting a chance to meet people and to ask questions.

Within 3 months you will:

  • Gain the trust of the Strategist on your team, cross-functional counterparts and clients that you partner with
  • Assess areas of growth and opportunity on the both of your teams team: What are ways you’d like to influence the ways of working that can lead to better outcomes?
  • Present areas opportunity areas and operational plan to Head of Strategy and Business Leads

Within 6 months you will:

  • Drive strategic excellence, innovation and integration on both of your accounts
  • Upskill the Strategist on your team, coaching and inspiring along the way
  • Identify 2-3 proactive strategic opportunities that lead to new creative briefs

Within 12 months you will:

  • Be seen as a strategic leader by the department, your clients and agency leadership
  • Own the client relationship on both of your accounts, with high-level oversight from Head of Strategy
  • Scale up and take on a larger support team
